A 2-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour offers a thrilling experience for those visitors who wish to see the beauty of the Moroccan Sahara in a short time. The excursion begins early in the morning from Marrakech, heading southeast via the beautiful High Atlas Mountains along the winding roads of the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, which offers panoramic views of mountain scenery and villages.
There are voluntary stops en route at cultural and historical sites, including the iconic Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Hollywood movie set known for its earthen clay buildings, and the film city of Ouarzazate, which has been described as the "Gateway to the Desert." From there, the trip continues through the wide Draa Valley, flanked by thousands of palm trees and old Berber villages, providing the visitor with a deep impression of southern Moroccan culture and nature.
In the late afternoon, you'll arrive at Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, tall, golden sand dunes that stretch to the horizon. From here, you'll take a camel trek into the desert, winding through the mesmerizing dunes as the sun sets. Tonight, you'll stay in a traditional desert camp, where you can enjoy a local dinner under the stars, with Berber music around the campfire.
On the second day, you can wake up early for a sunrise camel ride before breakfast at the camp. Then there is the lengthy but scenic return drive to Marrakech, arriving in the evening. While the tour attempts to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, it is ideal for travelers on a tight schedule who do not wish to miss the most well-known desert landscapes of Morocco.
